The very popular, best version ever Mark IV Sea Kayak Trolley is now ready, featuring a heavier duty, smaller diameter axel and wheel spacers mounted into the the trolley board making it lighter, stronger and with less parts to lose.
Due to popular demand we also offer the Explorer Trolley, a wider cart for transporting Canadian Canoes and the Adventurer Trolley a cart for wider sit on canoes.
It all started by chance 21 years ago! Sea kayaking on the Atlantic Coast of Scotland, having landed in the evening on a quiet secluded sandy beach, tent up and not a soul in sight!
Relaxing in the evening sun when a gaggle of like minded Sea Kayakers came round the point heading for the same beach, my peace was shattered! Going through the usual greetings as they pitched tents and sorted their gear.
My trolley ( cart ) was resting by my kayak as one kayaker approached, pondering and eyeing my Trolley, he introduced himself as Mike Thomson of Scottish Paddler Supplies and stated he was in the Kayaking business selling new sea kayaks and accessories.
He enquired where I got the Trolley, I made it myself, I replied, as I could not find anything on the market suitable, he went on to say that we should develop the concept and manufacture them for the market. On our return to the car park he then saw the very first J Cradles on my roof and KCS was born! We ended up discussing names for the company and the products over a couple of wee ( small ) drams of whisky looking out over the Atlantic Ocean at sunset, and the J Bars became J Cradles as sea kayakers Cradles their expensive kayaks, the rest is history and Kayak Carrier Systems was born.
Through time and evolution the company has expanded with new innovations and designs, always seeking to better our products, the Trolley evolved to be one of the best in the market, simple to assemble yet strong and light with fewer parts, fits into all hatches when disassembled and indestructible even with a fully laden double ( and more! ) sea kayak packed for a long unsupported expedition.
Just last month we made some improvements to the Sea Kayak Trolley, it became the Mark 3, we then came up with some other ideas which worked in test and were applied to production thus came the Mark 4 the changes although simple were the change of axle diameter from 1" to 3/4" ( 20mm) built in wheel spacers ( reducing parts to get lost ) and the Alloy Leg to stand the trolley up prior to loading the kayak ( cutting manufacturing time down )
We have designed an extension for the centre of the Trolley making it usable for Canadian Canoes, Sit on Top Kayaks naming this model the Explorer supplied with a longer axle plus the axle for the Expedition Sea Kayak version thus being two Trolleys with two uses, as we knew that many Sea Kayaker in the UK also had Canadian Canoes. We have just done a different Trolley to accommodate Sit on Kayaks with a keel, the frames being slightly higher and the centre extension lower to fit these.
For all our models trolleys we supply three different types of wheels to suit all customers preferences and their Kayaks, 10" puncture proof tyres ( tires ) ( Foam Filled ) no valves or tubes to get eroded by salt and sand. 10" tubed tires which fit into the 10" NDK hatches ( yes they do fit ) 8" pneumatic tires which fit the smaller hatches of the Rockpool Kayaks and similar kayaks with small hatches.
Manufactured from Polypropylene, stainless steel bolts and nuts, alloy axles heavy duty plastic wheels with rubber tires the trolleys weigh in at only 3 kilos ( 6 lbs ) approx. Including strap and spares pack.
Over time we have exported to countries around the world, with amazing feedback from customers on expeditions and sea kayakers who have found the trolley invaluable for long portages over rough terrain, or just getting the kayak to the water when the tide is out saving a long carry, to getting on and off Ferries down the car ramps.
